About Us
In 1954 The Al Azhar Mounted Patrol was formed, and their home was the former Alberta Ice Company. You see the 151 Acre site just north of the bow river included what is now called McKinnon Lake. Ice from that lake was used to supply the refrigeration needs of the CP Rail line which stopped at Keith Siding just north of the lake. With the advent of refrigerated rail cars, the Alberta Ice Co became obsolete. To harvest the ice from the lake horses were used, and the site was well equipped as an equine facility, in fact the barn which was built in 1912 still stands and is used today.
From 1954 until today the site has been a private facility for its members, their families, and their horses. The members have ridden in countless parades throughout North America, including the World-Famous Calgary Stampede and Rose Bowl Parades. As well preforming our version of a musical ride.
Fast forward to 1991, with the help from countless members and the Alberta Government the Fezdome was built. The structure at the time and still today remains as one of the largest indoor riding arenas in Alberta. Pair the Fezdome with the large outdoor riding arena we are well suited to host Western Pleasure riders for their equine facility needs. With many pastures and newly built paddocks, we can accommodate a single horse or group horse boarding. Couple these amenities along with a large heated indoor riding arena, an outdoor arena and tons of parking, and you have what we call the Calgary Shrine Stables.
Located in the shadow of Stoney trail just west of Bowness Park we are most certainly the largest Western Pleasure Horse facility in the City of Calgary. Add into the offering our Wrangler lives on site to maintain steady care for our horses and yours!
